A Better Way To Grow

Edible & Ecological Landscaping in Ventura County

At Good Natured Plants, we believe your landscape should do more than just look good—it should nourish you, your family, and the planet. Based in Southern California, we specialize in transforming ordinary yards into abundant, eco-friendly foodscapes that are as beautiful as they are bountiful. we believe healthy ecosystems start at home—with the right plants, the right design, and the right care. When you feed the soil, everything else follows: flavor, pollinators, biodiversity, and abundance. We help create balance and beauty at every level. When you feed the soil, the soil feeds everything else—including you, your family, and the wildlife that calls your garden home. We’re here to help you grow it—all of it.

Our designs are rooted in permaculture principles, especially function stacking, where each element in your landscape serves multiple purposes. A fruit tree might offer shade, food, pollinator habitat, and beauty—all in one. A rain garden can manage runoff and support beneficial insects. Every choice we make is intentional, creating resilient systems that give more than they take.

We're also passionate about experimentation and adaptation. We're constantly testing new fruit varieties, vegetables, and perennials to discover what grows best in our Southern California climate. Only the standouts—the tastiest, toughest, and most productive—make it into our plant palette for clients.

Most importantly, we don’t disappear after installation. We value ongoing relationships with our clients. Whether you prefer to manage your garden yourself or want continued support, we’re always available for seasonal check-ins, coaching, and problem-solving. Your garden's success is our shared goal.

Our Permaculture Landscape Design Process

At Good Natured Plants, we don't just design gardens; we cultivate thriving, resilient foodscapes that are unique to you and your land. We guide you through a thoughtful, collaborative process, transforming your vision into an abundant reality.

STEP ONE | Initial Consultation

Our initial consultation is your opportunity to share your aspirations with us, and for our team to truly listen and observe your space. We'll walk your property with a keen eye, noting the nuances of existing conditions, the dance of light patterns throughout the day, and every unique feature that makes your yard your own. We'll dive deep into understanding your goals and your family's needs, whether you dream of a bountiful vegetable patch, a vibrant herb spiral, or a resilient fruit orchard. This personalized approach allows us to pinpoint the most optimal locations for your edible garden, considering factors like sun exposure, water access, and existing features. We'll help you visualize the ideal size and scope of your project, ensuring it aligns perfectly with your aspirations and the natural rhythm of your land.

During this complimentary 30-minute consultation, we'll also provide a clear outline and estimated pricing for your custom edible garden design. Occasionally, we find that an extensive design process isn't necessary, and in those instances, we can streamline our approach, moving directly to the "GROWING" phase.

STEP TWO | Foodscape Design

Once you've approved the scope and pricing for your custom edible garden design, we'll immerse ourselves in the creative process, translating our observations into a living plan. This phase often involves multiple in-person visits, allowing us to truly understand the site's unique microclimates and existing features across different times and seasons. We conduct thorough soil testing for nutrients and potential toxins, laying the crucial groundwork for healthy plant growth. Our permaculture-informed designs are deeply rooted in principles of ecological resilience, water efficiency, and long-term abundance. We'll then present you with detailed sketches and comprehensive plans for your edible garden layout, thoughtfully integrating the locations and goals we discussed. This design phase includes one round of refinement on your selected garden design, ensuring the final plan is a perfect reflection of your vision and our shared understanding.

Our design fee is based on lot size and project scope, reflecting the complexity and detail involved in creating a truly bespoke foodscape:

STEP THREE | Earthwork + Build

With your approved permaculture design plan in hand, we’ll move into the exciting earthwork and build-out phase, bringing your custom foodscape to life. Our skilled team performs essential earthwork, including carefully clearing and removing existing weeds or lawns, bringing in nutrient-rich new soil, and installing appropriate ground cover and pathway materials that enhance both beauty and function. We specialize in crafting beautiful and durable custom garden woodwork, such as raised beds, elegant trellises, and other beneficial structures that support your plants and elevate your outdoor space. For any components of your project requiring specialized contractors or heavy machinery, we maintain strong relationships with trusted local partners whom we will seamlessly integrate into the process, ensuring a smooth and efficient execution.

Pricing for this phase is determined based on the selected and approved design plan. We understand that budget is an important consideration; if you have a specific budget in mind for the build-out, please communicate this during our initial consultation so we can thoughtfully design and plan to fit your financial parameters.
